The world says that blessing or good fortune is based on riches, honor, fame, pleasure, and worldly possessions. The problem is that all these things don’t make us happy for very long. Think about how you feel when you make a large purchase like an expensive electronic device or a new car. Sure, you feel happy for a while, but in six months, will you still feel that thrill? Probably not.
Today is SANCTITY OF LIFE SUNDAY! And in our gospel, Jesus invites us to become disciples of life, when he said: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men!”
In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus’s reaction to the news that his cousin John has been arrested: he goes into seclusion back at home in Galilee, maybe for one last visit home with Mary, and then begins gathering the band of followers who will become his apostles.
When we say the words of the Agnus Dei, or Lamb of God, during Mass, we are directly quoting John the Baptist. The scene is set on the banks of the Jordan River. John has been gathering disciples by powerfully calling for repentance in light of the coming kingdom of God. One day, as he sees Jesus, he cries out, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!”
The Youth Center will be closed on Monday, January 16th in observance of Martin Luther King Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 17th at 12:00 Noon.
The story of the magi, the three wise men, who traveled from the East to pay homage to Jesus as the King of the Jews, is part of our Christmas tradition. The magi, after a detour to see King Herod, brought their most valuable possessions to lay at the feet of the newborn King.
The Item of the Month for January is Winter Coats, Jackets, Blankets and Bedding items. We have families in the community who would be happy to have them. Please make sure they are not torn and are in good condition. As always, if you have any other items you would like to donate; we will take them as well. Please leave your donated items in our designated donation bins located in the hallway of Maher Hall. Thank You for your Donations and Continued Support!!!!!
Today is a beautiful and important feast in the life of the Church. Our focus today isn't on starting the new year—although that is certainly reason for celebration, and what better way is there to start out the new year than by going to Mass? Our focus today is on Mary and her motherhood. There is no Christmas without Christ, but there is no Christ without his mother.
