Today is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, marking the beginning of Holy Week—a sacred time when the Catholic Church invites us to journey with Jesus on His path to Calvary. This day is unique, not only because we wave palms while singing “Hosanna,” but because we journey with Christ from His triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the depths of His suffering and death. We began with jubilation, echoing the voices of the crowds who cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” as Jesus entered Jerusalem. They welcomed Him, expecting a political Messiah who would liberate them from oppression. However, Jesus came as the humble servant King, riding on a donkey rather than a war horse—thus fulfilling the prophecies foretold in Scripture. Then came a sudden shift—from shouts of “Hosanna!” to shouts of “Crucify Him!” In this dramatic change, we see not only the crowd, but ourselves: our own tendency to welcome Jesus when life is going well and to abandon Him when things become difficult. The story of the Passion reveals the depth of God’s love. Jesus is betrayed, denied, and abandoned by His followers. He is mocked and beaten—yet He endures it all out of love for us. Jesus’ silence before Pilate speaks louder than words. Not because He is unable to defend Himself, but because He chooses to embrace suffering for our sake. His suffering is a gift poured out for the salvation of humanity. In the Garden of Gethsemane, we witness both Jesus’ human vulnerability and His divine obedience. He freely chooses to submit to the Father’s will, even to the point of death. In His suffering, He teaches us how to trust God amid our own moments of difficulty and uncertainty. As we enter Holy Week, the Lord calls us to walk this same road with Him. He asks us, just as He asked Peter, James, and John in Gethsemane, “Remain here and keep watch with me.” Yet, like the disciples, we often grow tired, fall asleep, or run away. Jesus continues to invite us to stay awake—to be present and remain with Him. Palm Sunday invites us to hold both the palms and the Passion together: to rejoice in Christ as our King while following Him on the way of the cross. May we journey with Jesus this week, trusting that through His suffering and death, He will lead us to the fullness of life. As we lay down our palms, may we also lay down our hearts in humble surrender to Jesus, our Savior. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
