“Do not let your hearts be troubled.” (John 14:1) These are the words of comfort Jesus wants us to hear on this Fifth Sunday of Easter. These are words each of us needs because many hearts are troubled today. We carry different worries—our families, our health, our jobs, our world. Some of us might have come to Mass with heavy burdens we haven’t told anyone, not even members of our family. And Jesus knows it very well. Just as He looks at His disciples—anxious, confused, and afraid—and speaks directly into their fear: “Do not let your hearts be troubled,” He tells it to you and me. He doesn’t say this because everything is easy. He says it because He is with them, and He is with us. He knows our fears.
Jesus knows what it’s like when life changes suddenly, when we lose someone we care about and love so much, when plans fall apart, when the future is uncertain and seems so unclear.
In the midst of Jesus’ assurance and comfort, Thomas asks the question we all ask at some point: “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” (John 14:5) It is our own question when we want to follow Him but we feel lost, when we want to do the right thing but we’re not sure how to start, when we want to hope but we do not know where to find it.
And so Jesus says, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.” (John 14:6) When we feel lost, walk with Him, when we feel the world is crumbling down, lean on Him, when we feel unworthy to be standing in front of Him, trust Him because He is the WAY of love, mercy and new beginnings.
When we feel abandoned, when we feel unforgiven, when we feel we have lost our purpose in life, listen to Him because when we root ourselves in Him who is the TRUTH, we find that our life matters. In His TRUTH we find clarity and meaning. When we are in grief, when we are too weak to go on, when we feel our life is empty that even the world cannot fill, He comes to us as the LIFE—comforting us, strengthening us and filling up our emptiness.
Jesus tells us not to let our hearts be troubled not because life is easy and free from any troubles but because He wants us to know that we are not alone. He is always the WAY where we can find fullness of life. He is the TRUTH that gives us clarity and He is the LIFE that fills you and me.
May we continue to walk with Him more trustingly, believe in Him more deeply and rely on Him more faithfully, for in Him, everything will be well.
