Our Diocesan policy that prohibits the distribution of political materials in our parishes or the allowing of candidates for office to speak to our people at Mass or any other gathering. The only election related materials that may be distributed would be those created by the Diocese, the California Catholic Conference or the Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Further, I ask that all of you, who in your ministries are a public representation of the Church, refrain from making public statements of support or opposition to any political candidate, either in the media, through social media or in any other publicly demonstrative manner.
Please understand that these policies are not in place to discourage participation in the political process. Rather, it is our role to help the people answer the call to Faithful Citizenship through informing themselves of the issues and candidates, examining their conscience in the light of Church teaching and participating by casting their vote or, if they are unable to do so, encouraging other to vote. This is where we need to place our emphasis and our efforts in this election season.
